As a lifelong Godzilla fan I can’t tell you how excited I was to read in March 2010 that Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have received the rights to make an American Godzilla movie. Before it was officially announced there had been rumors floating in around August 2009 that LP was in negotiations with Toho Studios for the rights to Godzilla and it was officially confirmed a few months later. The announcement was that LP had secured the rights and was aiming for a 2012 release with the film being a reboot to the franchise and a director was to be announced soon. After the announcement things were silent until in July at the San Diego Comic Con where LP was handing out t-shirts with a new Godzilla design on them in order to promote the movie. The design was not the official design for the new Godzilla but a promotion for the movie. Later in September of that year someone had caught up with one of the producers, Brian Rogers, and asked him about the movie. He replied that 2012 was the target release date and that Godzilla would fight one or more monsters in the film. The film is also rumored to be in 3D. Everything was once again quiet until January 2011 where Gareth Edwards was officially announced to direct the film. Edwards is best know for his film “Monsters” which he mostly did himself on a low budget but it has gained popularity. Edwards has admitted to being a fan of the Godzilla series and has stressed the importance of getting the film done right. After that things have been very quiet regarding the film. The only other details that have been found out was that scriptwriter David Callaham was brought aboard only to have been replaced with a new yet to be announced writer. Thomas Tull has also been quoted as saying the film was in “full active development” and that LP wasn’t granting interviews about the film because of that.
With everything being so quiet a lot of Godzilla fans, including myself, are becoming increasingly frustrated by lack of news. I spoke to a close friend of mine, Matt Williams, and discussed this with him saying how even if they want to keep things quiet at least give us just a little info every now and then just so we know everything is on the right track but this total darkness is confusing and annoying a lot of fans. Today I learned that Legendary has a brand new Facebook and Twitter page and so I tweeted them asking if there would be any info on the new “Godzilla” movie at Comic Con this year to which they replied to me saying…..
“We’ll be revealing news throughout SDCC for various film and comic projects. Visit http://bit.ly/r9Mp1x for regular updates.”
Well I wasn’t expecting an answer so that was surprising but it had at least got my hopes up that we would finally be getting new on “Godzilla.” Well when I had returned tonight from work I found out that Legendary had announced their line up for Comic Con and that “Godzilla” was not on the list. As I found that out I was very unhappy because I felt that we deserved some kind of info. I looked on their FB page to see several upset Godzilla fans posting questions as to why the film was not on LP’s schedule. Right now it seems the only thing we can hope for is that Godzilla fans show up to Comic Con and ask the LP panel what the status is on “Godzilla” and why we aren’t receiving any news. This is all we know so far on the new American Godzilla movie. However I feel that if Comic Con comes and goes and we still find out nothing on the movie then I will start to really fear the film not being made at all. As fans all we can do is wait and see and pay close attention to the Comic Con and hope for the best! I will be sure to keep updates on it.
